What is Psychotherapy and Art Therapy?

Psychotherapy is a collaborative approach for managing and treating mental health concerns, symptoms and diagnoses. A therapist and a client engage in conversation about the presenting concerns, the client's history, and work on strategies that are best suited in helping the client reach their goals.

Art Therapy is the process of combining creativity and psychotherapy via art making. This creative process encourages self-exploration and facilitates healing. Expressive Arts Therapy can incorporate a variety of mediums and methods of self-expression. The artistic expression can also be viewed as a non-verbal communicator of deeper thoughts, feelings, behaviours, memories, and associations. It can be very powerful, cathartic, and relaxing.

Our Mission

Our focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. We achieve this by providing a neutral safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan.

Our Approach

We believe in a client-centered, culturally-sensitive, strengths-based, and trauma-informed approach.

Expectations and Benefits of Therapy

What Can You Expect From Therapy?

It is important to begin your therapeutic journey with an open mind. An individual may have objective progress within the first session while another person may not see visible progress until the tenth session. Everyone's journey looks different.

At Rizvi Wellness Inc., we think it is important for you to be aware of what to expect during your healing journey in terms of the sessions and the potential benefits to therapy. Regardless of whether you engage in talk therapy or choose to incorporate your imagination via the creative process, we strive to use your strengths and empower you during your sessions to become the best possible version of yourself.

Our focus is:

  • A Safe and Accessible Environment: providing you with a safe space to express yourself regardless of your age, gender, struggles, and goals. We ensure your confidentiality and progress is of utmost importance.
  • Providing Containment: we do our best to make sure that we are able to assist you in managing your needs and helping you contain your emotions during and after a session. Therapy can bring up a multitude of feelings and memories and it's possible that some clients may feel worse before they feel better or may want to give up on therapy. Using tools and strategies to best contain these feelings and stay in touch with your needs is an essential part of therapeutic growth.
  • Client-Centered Self-Expression: allowing you to engage in expressing your thoughts, feelings and emotions in ways that best suit you. We will not judge, analyze or force you to express yourself in any way that is not natural to you. Yes, that also includes what and how you choose to express yourself creatively. YOU are the expert of your life and we are here to help you.
  • Trauma-Informed Care and Culturally Sensitivity: we aim to ensure that we hold space for clients and their experienced trauma. We also understand that each individual has their own lived cultural experience that can be very different from our own even if we come from the same background. We do not assume your truth or narrative and instead work from a place of support and validation.
  • Strengths-Based: by providing a safe, accessible and client-centered environment, we work to encourage and foster your strengths. By exploring and building on what you are already good at, we can work towards creating more positive strengths and achieving proposed goals.
  • Self-Empowerment and Mindfulness: through playfulness via the creative process as well as the camaraderie, trust, and strengths we develop throughout our sessions, you can experience and notice small changes in your habits, thought processes and reactions. This can provide a sense of presence and mindfulness within the sessions and  in our daily lives, further facilitating healing.
  • Build and Apply Skills: building real, practical and concrete skills that can be applied in session and outside of the session that can help you overcome obstacles and grow.
  • Tools and modalities: use the necessary tools and modalities that apply to your specific situation, eg. CBT, DBT, ACT, MBAT, etc.
